Display issues in Internet Explorer
The site will look very strange if you are using Internet Explorer for a number of reasons.
This is because I have designed the site the the standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium
(
www.w3.org)
guidelines, something that Microsoft (even though they are part of the Consortium) don't think apply to them.
As a result as I have to create a site that works in all the other browsers and another version for Microsoft's
pile of rubbish, and, as this is my home site I can't be bothered at the moment. Therefore the site should look
fine in all other browsers except IE (which you shouldn't be using anyway - see below). Also Internet Explorer is incapable
of handling transparency on png files - not going to go into detail but look at the site in Firefox and IE and you will see
the difference.
Why shouldn't I be using Internet Explorer?
Apart from the reasons mentioned above about standards it is not generally a good idea to use Internet Explorer
for browsing the web for (quite) a number of security reasons. I am not going to go into the details here but
if you want to know what I am going on about then there are a few articles about it
here,
here and
here
(they were just from a very quick search on Google click
here for the results)
What should I use instead then?

My personal favourite is Mozilla Firefox (
www.getfirefox.com)
as it is vastly more secure and allows you to download different themes and extensions to get it to do exactly what you want.
Other options include Opera (
www.opera.com).
The download version of Opera has adverts in the corner and you have to pay to get a version that doesn't but the free version
is ok if you can put up with the ads.
There are others but if you are using Windows, which I am presuming you are if you are having issues with Internet Explorer
(the Mac version of IE actually works much better than the Windows one), then these two are your best bet.
Note: If you like Firefox and are interested there is the email companion to it called Thunberbird
(www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/)
as Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express have many of the same security issues that Internet Explorer has.
I'm stuck / confused!
Give me a shout if you have any questions and I will try and help :)
Lastly, if you have been using Internet Explorer for a while you will probably want to download and install
both Ad-Aware (
www.lavasoft.com)
and Spybot S&D (
www.safer-networking.org)
to remove the crap that Internet Explorer allows people to install on your machine just by surfing the web.
Again, shout if you get stuck :)
